Let’s be honest. Living WAY below your means is tough enough, let alone how different it makes you from others. It’s timely that Leo from Zen Habits released a post on Overcoming the Social Costs of Being Different right as we release episode #4 of The Chasing Financial Freedom Podcast. We should have had him on the show this week! Oh well, maybe next time.
This Week’s Show is On Relationships
This week, Jason, from Dividend Mantra, and I talk about a subject that’s near and dear to our hearts, coping with being different. It’s not easy to be different and live in a different way than our friends and family do. It can even hinder our chances of finding/keeping significant others or additional friends. So, how do we do it? We find people that really care about us and are supportive of what we’re doing and stick with them, that’s how.
This stuff is really important to us. We’re in it for the long haul and the decision to live below our means and value our time over money is something that we plan to stick with. That means, spending our precious time and money on relationships with friends who aren’t supportive and knock us down for not going out and spending money just isn’t a good thing for us. Could it be that this lifestyle is only for introverts? I wouldn’t go that far, but I do believe you have to be willing to downsize your social group and focus on the truly meaningful relationships in your life. There simply isn’t enough time and money to support 40 friends while saving for financial independence or starting a business with all you’ve got. Well, maybe there is, but Jason and I haven’t figured it out yet.
Share Your Experiences in the Comments!
Listen to this episode to hear our experiences with our relationships over the past three and a half years, when Jason and I started down this “different” path. All we know is how it’s affected our social lives and relationships. If you have experiences different from ours, which I’m sure you do, I’d love to hear them and I bet other readers would as well so let us know in the comments how you’re dealing with being different.
